The Parliament has made the decision to adopt the State’s new 6-month paid maternity leave policy for its employees.

The General Purpose Committee made the decision to adopt the policy via a vote this Thursday afternoon.

Civil Service Act has been amended to accommodate 6 months of paid maternity leave and one month of paid paternity leave for all civil servants.

The amendment took effect on March 7, 2019.

Parliament reports the General Purpose Committee adopted the policy by amending the Parliamentary Service Regulations.

Many State companies and institutions have adopted the new maternity and paternity leave policy, including State Trading Organization (STO), Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), Allied Insurance, State Electric Company (STELCO), and Local Government Authority (LGA).

Civil servants were previously awarded only three months of paid maternity leave and only three days of paid paternity leave.
