Appeal hearings over Yameen’s arrest concluded at High Court

Press was barred from the courtroom this Tuesday as the High Court concluded the hearings in the appeal filed by former Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom over his arrest.

Criminal Court issued the arrest warrant against Yameen on February 18 based on a police intelligence report which included evidence he attempted to tamper with witness testimony in his money laundering case.

The appeal hearing at the High Court this Tuesday was held behind closed doors.

The court reports the appeal hearings have now been concluded, and the next hearing will be scheduled to announce the verdict.

Yameen is being kept detained at the Special Protection Unit of Maafushi Prison.

Yameen was charged with money laundering and issuing false statements to State institutions following Maldives Police Service’s investigation into the USD 1 million - believed to be embezzled funds in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) scam – deposited to his account at the Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB) by SOF Private Limited.
