President Solih addresses the Parliament

National Mental Health Center will be established within the next two to three months. And Aasandha services will be made available for treatment of such conditions. Necessary facilities are being developed at the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital. And the necessary Mental Health Bill will be submitted to the Parliament this year.

The yearly increase in number of children with Thalassemia is a great challenge facing the health sector. Arrangements will be made this year to ensure the serum protein test to identify percentage of iron in blood of Thalassemia patients can be carried out across Maldives.

The interest rate of student loans for studies abroad has been lowered to three percent, and the loan repayment period extended by 25 percent. With this change, the monthly repayment amount of students who take the biggest loan amount will be reduced by MVR 4,000.

Maldivian youth will be able to remain in the country to complete free education up to first degree-level before the end of this month.

In order to reform the tax system, I plan on submitting a Bill to the Parliament this year to introduce income tax. Once the Bill passes, income tax will take effect next year. Then, we can enjoy the pleasure of ‘jazeera’ development.
