Women in Maldives continue facing challenges competing for electoral positions despite the attempt by some to paint a rosier picture, says Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services, Shidhatha Shareef.

Speaking at the inauguration of the 3rd term of the Male’ City Council’s Women’s Development Committee at Rasrani Bageecha last Wednesday night, Shidhatha pointed out the lack of equal opportunity for women in policy and decision making level.

She also pointed out what while women contribute highly to politics, few women are appointed to political positions.

She also noted the lack of gender equality in economy and asset ownership.

Shidhatha said that while women made up for 50 percent of the population, having to ask the question whether women should have equal opportunity was shameful.
