Only the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and not any other political party has a true understanding of what the current administration’s pledges to the people mean, says former Maldivian President and Leader of MDP, Mohamed Nasheed.

Speaking during an MDP Primary event this Wednesday, Nasheed said not political party, except for MDP, understood why a pledge is made or what a pledge actually is.

“There are none among us, except for MDP, which understands what these pledges are. It’s not clear to the other political parties among us why a pledge is made and what the pledge is,” said Nasheed, in reference to other government coalition parties.

Nasheed said that a pledge was “not a matter of romantic fancy”, but something which is made by asking the people what they want in order to fulfil their demands.

He said that the party should not expect other parties to work on fulfilling pledges made by MDP itself. And stressed the need to attain majority at the Parliament in order to fulfill its pledges.

COURTS WILL BE REFORMED WITH HELP OF EXISTING JUDGES

During his speech this Wednesday, Nasheed also spoke of judicial reform.

He said that judicial reform was not a measure against existing judges, but that he planned on reforming the judiciary with assistance from existing judges, especially the Chief Justice.

“I am sure the Chief Justice himself will stand up to restore the public’s trust in the judiciary. From what I see, we can reform the Maldivian judiciary with the current people in our judiciary,” said Nasheed.

Nasheed expressed confidence the next Parliament will be different, made up of people of integrity and not “thieves”.
