The Bill submitted by Dhidhdoo MP Abdul Latheef Mohamed – designed to bar former presidents from running for the Parliament – conflicts with the Maldivian Constitution, says Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Speaking during a press conference held by MDP this Tuesday afternoon, Chairperson of MDP, Hassan Latheef accused MP Latheef of targeting the Leader of MDP and former Maldivian President Mogamed Nasheed with his Bill.
Hassan Latheef said the requirements for parliamentary candidates was written down in the Maldivian Constitution. And that a constraint on former Maldivian presidents from running for the Parliament requires amending the Constitution.
“Therefore, there is no room to consider MP Abdul Latheef’s amendment other than a direct conflict to the Maldivian Constitution,” said Hassan Latheef.
“If the Constitution states certain criteria, no single criterion can be removed or added by a law. It can be achieved only by amending the Constitution itself,” said Hassan Latheef.
He noted that the Bill has now been submitted to the Parliament, and said MDP does not believe the Bill will be accepted by the Parliament.
He also expressed concern the Bill was submitted by a lawmaker from Jumhoory Party (JP) – a government coalition partner.
“The existence of a coalition requires all parties to work together both at the Parliament and within the government,” said Hassan Latheef.
He said the MDP was ready to ensure the Bill is not passed by the Parliament. And expressed confidence Nasheed will win the upcoming parliamentary elections in direct challenge to the Bill.
Meanwhile, parliamentary group leader of JP, Kinbidhoo MP Abdulla Riyaz has announced the Bill was submitted without consultation with the party’s parliamentary group, and has asked MP Abdul Latheef to withdraw the Bill.
