Maldives Medical and Dental Council (MMDC) has amended regulations following its decision to no longer endorse pre-med courses as minimum requirement for entry into a basic medical or dental program.
High marks at GCE A Level science subjects are a prerequisite for MBBS and BDS courses, but some medical colleges accept one-year pre-med courses as a substitute for GCE A Level requirement.
The MMDC, in a statement this Monday, noted that some pre-med courses lacked the required standard, lowering the education standard of pre-med students.
The council said that it had taken note some of the pre-med courses run in international colleges directly targeted Maldivian students. Resulting in financial and psychological damage to several students.
“We also take note that completion of a one-year pre-med program to substitute for GCE A Levels does not meet the standard prerequisite for placement in MBBS and BDS at many of the international universities,” wrote the council in its statement.
The council said that pre-med students who made payments for pre-med courses or started studies for pre-med courses before January 14, 2019 are exempt from the new regulation.
