President appeals to resorts to assist in development of nearby islands

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has appealed to resorts to assist in providing essential services to nearby islands such as water and sanitation.

Speaking during the inauguration of Champa Brothers backed sanitation services in N. Hen’badoo this Thursday afternoon, Solih said it was the goal of the administration to provide essential services to all Maldivian islands. And said that it would lessen the stress on the State budget if resorts took the initiate to establish essential services in nearby islands.

The Hen’badoo Sanitation System was a MVR 18.9 million project carried out by Champa Brothers as a CSR initiative.

Solih said a lack of sanitation system in Hen’badhoo had led to contamination of the island’s water layer – which was still used by the locals to drink, cook and bathe.

He also addressed the lack of harbor at the island and overpopulation as two key issues facing Hen’badhoo.

Solih said that MVR 13.6 million has been allocated in the State budget for 2019 to construct a harbor in the island.

“The land space at the island is now full. There’s no room to issue any more land. And beach erosion is exacerbating the situation,” said Solih.

“The goal is to ensure every citizen is a land owner. Every family will have housing,” said Solih.

The President also pledged to solve the lack of space at the island’s school.
