Universal Enterprises donates MVR 300,000 for flood relief efforts

Universal Enterprises has donated MVR 300,000 to assist in flood relief efforts.

The MVR 300,000 cheque was presented to the National Disaster Management Center at the crisis center set up at Kalaafaanu School this Thursday morning.

Universal Enterprises reports the financial assistance is an initiative by Chairman of Universal Enterprises, Mohamed Umar Manik (MU Manik) as well as other Board directors to assist in relief efforts for the worst crisis to hit the capital in recent times.

The company expressed hope the donation will help the families affected by flooding.

“We are ready to lend any assistance we can in any national endeavor,” reported an official from the company.

The donation was accepted on behalf of Disaster Management Center by Minister of Defense, Mariya Ahmed Didi.

Mariya thanked the company, and said assistance has been pledged from other companies as well.

“We are sharing information on the figures and companies providing donations in order relay this information to the public. How the money will be utilized will be shared by the Disaster Management Center,” said Mariya.

A record 223.5 milliliters of rain water fell on Male’ City on Wednesday. The heavy rainfall and the damage to the city’s drainage system resulted in extensive flooding.

20 residences evacuated from two residences remain under the care of the Disaster Management Center.

Disaster Management Center reports the agency conducted assessments on 99 residences which suffered flood damage, and that the money donated by Universal Enterprises will go to the residences based on the financial evaluations currently underway.

A number of private businesses have provided both finance and equipment to assist in relief efforts.
