Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the new Maldivian administration will uphold the 65-year moratorium on the death penalty.
In a tweet this Tuesday afternoon, the Maldivian Foreign Ministry said the Maldivian administration will vote yes on the draft resolution, Moratorium on the Use of the Death Penalty, in the United Nations General Assembly.
The Government of Maldives will uphold the 65-year moratorium on the death penalty and will vote yes on the draft resolution in the UNGA entitled “Moratorium on the Use of the Death Penalty” (A/C.3/73/L.44)

The draft resolution was called for vote during the United Nations Commission on Human Rights meeting underway at Geneva, Switzerland.
The Maldivian delegation, headed by Minister at the President’s Office, Ahmed Naseem travelled to Geneva to attend the meetings last Monday.
He is scheduled to represent Maldives at the review of Maldives at the 65th Session of the Committee Against Torture which will be held from November 27-28.
Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, during his administration, announced an end to the moratorium on the death penalty, but no execution was carried out.
Maldives has several inmates on death row.
