Former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed is scheduled to begin his tour of Addu City this Tuesday afternoon.
Nasheed returned to Maldives after nearly three years in exile on November 1. He was original scheduled to travel to Addu City on November 2, but the trip was postponed due to bad weather.
Deputy Chairperson of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Ali Niyaz reported to ‘Sun’ that Nasheed will leave for Addu City at 2:30 pm this Tuesday on a Flyme flight.
Niyaz said Nasheed is scheduled to visit all districts of Addu City during the two-day tour.
The tour marks Nasheed’s first trip outside of the capital, Male’ City, since his return.
Addu City is a historically pro-MDP city. And the visit by the former Leader of MDP is expected to be greeted with great festivity.
Nasheed was found guilty of the illegal detention of Judge Abdulla Mohamed, who was the Chief Judge at Criminal Court during his administration, in March 2015, and sentenced to 13 years in prison.
He was serving his prison sentence when he obtained permission to travel to the UK for medical treatment. He later refused to return to Maldives and obtained political asylum in the UK.
Prosecutor General’s Office recently filed for a review of Nasheed’s sentence with the Supreme Court, and was granted an injunction to delay enforcing his sentence – allowing him to return to Maldives.
