Supreme Court orders delay in execution of Imran’s sentence

Supreme Court has issued an injuction to delay execution of Imran Abdulla’s prison sentence.

Imran, the leader of Adhaalath Party (AP) was sentenced to 12-years in prison for terrorism by the Criminal Court in 2015.

The Supreme Court, this Thursday, ordered authorities to delay execution of Imran’s sentence until the court completes its review.

The order was directed at Maldives Police Service, Maldives Correctional Service and all other law enforcement agencies.

“The court orders relevant State authorities not to take any action to enforce the sentence issued by Criminal Court against Imran Abdulla of Malhaaru in M. Kolhufushi,” reads the injunction issued by Supreme Court.

A review of Imran’s prison sentence was requested at the Supreme Court on October 29.

And the injunction for a delay in execution of the prison sentence was requested by Imran.

Imran had also filed for an appeal of his prison sentence with the Supreme Court after the High Court ruled to uphold the Criminal Court’s sentence.

The court also recently granted an injunction to delay the execution of the sentence issued against former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed, allowing him to return to Maldives without fear of arrest.
