Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed has resigned from his post as Speaker of People’s Majlis.
Deputy leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s parliamentary group, Vilimale’ MP Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik has confirmed Maseeh’s resignation to ‘Sun’.
Maseeh’s resignation comes ahead of a no-confidence vote against him scheduled at People’s Majlis later this Thursday.
A petition to impeach Maseeh – signed by 51 lawmakers – had already been submitted to the Majlis when the General Purpose Committee ruled the impeachment petition – signed by 43 lawmakers - filed in July, 2017 was valid, and scheduled a vote on the petition for this Thursday night.
MP Nihan has thanked Maseeh for his services in a Tweet.
“I commend you on your patience and courage as a PPM team player,” said Nihan, in his tweet.
