The General-Purpose Committee of People’s Majlis has determined the no-confidence motion filed against Speaker Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed in July, 2017 to be authentic, and scheduled the motion for Thursday.
The no-confidence motion is scheduled for 8 p.m. tomorrow night.
The motion was initially filed in July 2017 with the signatures of 45 MPs. However, the motion failed when 13 MPs of PPM who signed the motion left the party and the Elections Commission decided that those MPs have lost their parliamentarian seats and the 42 signatures needed for the motion are no longer valid.
And the Supreme Court looked into the case of the 12 MPs individually and decided that they all lost their seat at the parliament.
While a no-confidence motion against Maseeh failed last year, another motion was brought to the parliament floor last week with 51 signatures.
After filing the motion, the joint parliamentary group of the opposition coalition decided that the MP for Maamiligi constituency, Qasim Ibrahim, will be replacing Maseeh.
