Supreme Court has ordered a delay in execution of the 13-year prison sentence issued against former Maldivian president Mohamed Nasheed.

The Prosecutor General’s Office requested the Supreme Court for a review of the sentence issued against Nasheed on October 28.

The court, this Tuesday, ordered authorities to delay execution of Nasheed’s sentence until the court completes its review.

The order was directed at Maldives Police Service, Maldives Correctional Service and all other law enforcement agencies.

“The court orders relevant State authorities not to have any action regarding the sentence issued by Criminal Court against Mohamed Nasheed from G. Canaryge in Male’ City,” reads the injunction issued by Supreme Court.

The injunction was requested by the Prosecutor General’s Office.

Nasheed was issued the 13-year prison sentence in 2015. He has been living in exile at the UK after authorities granted him permission to travel to the UK for medical treatment.

The former President is scheduled to return to Maldives on November 1.
