Elections Commission (EC) has made the decision to charge a MVR 75,000 fine on Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
Speaking at a press conference this Monday, President of EC, Ahmed Shareef said the commission made its decision to fine PPM due to comments made during the party’s demonstrations which violate the integrity of the commission and its members.
“We had sent a letter to stop the attack on commission members, the commission, this commission’s integrity. We had warned we would take action if they didn’t stop,” said Shareef.
Shareef said the commission made its decision to fine PPM after it failed to cease its attack on the integrity of the commission and its members.
Shareef didn’t specify the regulation under which PPM was fined, or the duration during which they are required to pay the fine.
Several political parties have been fined for various violations over the years. But it is unclear if any party has been fined in the past for an attack on the integrity of the EC.
