The Elections Commission (EC) has accepted the candidacy application submitted by opposition coalition’s presidential candidate for Presidential Elections 2018, Hinnavaru MP Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu).

EC tweeted this Saturday morning that it has accepted Ibu’s candidacy and handed him the official letter of approval.

Ibu, the leader of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s parliamentary group, spoke to press before leaving for B. Atoll on a tour this Saturday morning.

He said EC’s acceptance of his candidacy was an important milestone in the efforts by opposition parties to win the election.

“There’s still many to be done. There are some tough, hard work ahead. But we will win the election on September 23 by a landslide with the efforts of the coalition and our supporters,” said Ibu.

Ibu submitted his candidacy application to EC last Thursday. He and his running mate, Faisal Naseem walked to the EC headquarters with members of the Maumoon Reform Movement, which is made up of MDP, Jumhoory Party, Adhaalath Party and former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s supporters.

After submitting the application, Ibu and Faisal held talks with President of EC, Ahmed Shareef regarding the election.

Application for the Presidential Elections 2018 was opened last Monday, July 23. The application deadline has now been extended to August 10.

President of EC, Shareef reports seven individuals took out candidacy applications by end of Thursday.
