LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) — Police in Pakistan have arrested a Muslim man accused of burning a Christian woman to death for refusing his marriage offer, an official said Monday.
Ijaz Shahid, a police official in the eastern Punjab province, said the suspect hurled gasoline at the woman outside her home in the city of Sialkot last week before setting her on fire and fleeing the scene.
The official says Asma Yaqub was taken to a hospital in the city of Lahore, where she died late Sunday. He says Rizwan Gujar confessed to the attack.
Attacks on women over marriage refusals or perceived "dishonor" are not uncommon in Pakistan. Such attacks often involve throwing acid with the intention to disfigure or kill.
