Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been contracted to build the runway at G. Dh. Maavarulu Airport.
The contract was signed in a function held at Ministry of Tourism this Thursday by Minister of Tourism Moosa Zameer and CEO of MTCC Ibrahim Ziyath.
Ministry of Tourism reports the MVR 57 million runway project contracted to MTCC includes a 1,220-meter runway, taxiway, apron, and a jetty.
MTCC has been contracted to complete the project within 160 days. CEO Ziyath said the company would try to complete the project ahead of schedule.
The company is already working on constructing runway and taxiway at airports under construction at H. Dh. Kulhudhuffushi and Sh. Funadhoo.
Minister Moosa Zameer said MTCC has ordered equipment and material needed for Maavarulu Airport along with material needed for Kulhudhuffushi Airport and Funadhoo Airport.
He said that sub-base preparation for Maavarulu Airport is already complete, which will make it easier for MTCC to start the project.
Moosa Zameer said work was being done to address challenges of building an airport at Maavarulu, given that it is an uninhabited island.
“Basic services will be available from Kulhudhuffushi and Fonadhoo from the islands’ utilities. But there’s that difficulty in Maavarulu. But we will find solutions,” said Moosa Zameer.
CEO of MTCC, Ibrahim Ziyath expressed confidence the runways, taxiways and aprons in the three airports will be completed on schedule.
