The two officers from Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF)’s Special Protection Group (SPG) who were recently released from detention after arrest under the declaration of State of Emergency have been dismissed from the military.

The two officers were released three days back after being kept detained at the MNDF headquarters.

“Sun” has been informed the two officers are:

  • Ahmed Shaaneez: former bodyguard for Minister of Tourism Moosa Zameer
  • Simad Ahmed: former bodyguard for former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed

The two officers have now been dismissed from the military.

A State of Emergency was declared in Maldives for a period of 15 days on February 5. The period was extended 30 more days on February 20.

A number of police and military officers have been arrested during the period, some for suspected complicity in an attempt to overthrow President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration.

When asked for a comment regarding the arrests, the media officer at MNDF, Captain Ibrahim Azim said the MNDF does not disclose information regarding administrative action against military officers or information regarding military officers dismissed from the service to the media.
